| Title: The Theology of David
Intro: My first thoughts regarding David automatically lead me to think of he and Bathsheba. My next thought was ’this is a picture of the blackness of each of our hearts‘. The Bible is a mirror that shows us who we really are. Next thing that came to mind was a recent story of a church that refused to discipline a couple that was in adultery and refused to repent. Then my mind asked, how could God use someone to write the book of Psalms that had committed such brazen acts of contempt for God’s laws? Does God wink at sin? Does He compromise, or sweep matters under the rug? The next words that popped into my head were, grace, longsuffering, and mercy. Maybe, because God is holy He can forgive. Maybe because He is so much greater then we are, He can be patient and longsuffering. Certainly God did love David, and David did have a heart after God. Maybe this relationship between a sinful man and holy God is a reminder of how needy we are and how awesome God is, and how willing He is to use sinful, yet forgiven people to serve Him? We truly do serve an awesome God, the Lord Jesus Christ.
Meaning: David = "beloved" 1) youngest son of Jesse and second king of Israel
Text: Psalms 33:1-9 Rejoice in the LORD, O ye righteous: for praise is comely for the upright. Praise the LORD with harp: sing unto him with the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings. Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise. For the word of the LORD is right; and all his works are done in truth.
5 He loveth righteousness and judgment: the earth is full of the goodness of the LORD. By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth. He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap: he layeth up the depth in storehouses. Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.
Opening prayer:
I. The Bibleology of David: What did David believe about the Word of God?
A. David believed the Word of the Lord was truth: v. 4 “For the word
of the LORD is right; and all his works are done in truth.”
1
1. Every goal was to seek the truth: John 17:17 “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.”
2. Every Word preservation: Matt. 4:4 “But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”
3. Every vowel and consonant preservation: Matt. 5:18 “For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.”
B. David believed that the Word was the foundation of Creation: v. 6
“By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.”
II. The Theology Proper of David: What was David’s belief in God the Father?
A. David believed in the goodneess of God: v.5

“O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.”
B. David believed the Lord was the supreme Authority: v.8
“Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the
inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.”

A. David believed in rejoicing in the Lord: v.1 “Rejoice in the LORD, O ye righteous: for praise is comely (beautiful) for the upright.”
B. David believed in praising the Lord: v.2 “Praise the LORD with harp: sing unto him with the psaltery (harp, guitar) and an instrument of ten strings.”
C. David believed in singing to the Lord: v.3 “Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise.”
2
1. The thought comes to mind, why a new song?
2. The answer is in studying & meditating on Scripture.
3. The Bible standard for music writers is: Eph. 5:19 “Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;”
IV. The soterology of David: What did David believe about salvation?
A. David believed in the seed promise: Genesis 3:15 “And
I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy
seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise
his heel.”
B. David penned the words foretelling the Lord going to Golgotha some 600 years before it took place. Psalm 22:1 “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring?
V. The creationism of David: What did David believe about Creation?
A. David believed that the heavens and humanity came from the Lord: v.6 “By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.”
1. He believed that the Lord created the heavens: Gen. 1:6-8
“And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so. And God called the firmament Heaven…
a. II Peter 3:5 “For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water”
2. He believed the universe was created by the Lord: Heb. 11:3
“Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.”
3
B. David believed that the Lord made the seas: v.7 “He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap: he layeth up the depth in storehouses.”
1. He believed God made the dry land by speaking the word: Gen. 1:9 “And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear:
and it was so.”
C. David believed that God spoke the world into existence: v.9 “For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.”
1. David believed in the biblical account of Creation: Gen. 1:1-3 “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness
was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.”
2. David believed in the Lord’s creation & commands: Psalms 148:5, 6 “Let them praise the name of the LORD: for he commanded, and they were created. He hath also stablished them for ever and ever: he hath made a decree which shall not pass.”
Conclusion: King David believed as we do that the Bible is the Word of God, He believes in God the Father as we do, he worshiped as we do, he believed is salvation as we do, and he believed in Creation as we do. So what does this all mean to us?
1. We need to know our Bible in order to believe and practice our Bible.
2. We need to obey and follow our Father as supreme authority.
3. We need to know the biblical pattern of godly music and worship in order to bring do honor and glory to the LORD.
4. We need to act upon or be affirmed in our salvation
(faith in Jesus Christ as our personal Savior).
5. We should be confident in the belief and account of God’s Creation as recorded in Scripture for us.
